The eruption in Tonga is most likely to be at Home Reef. The underwater volcano erupted in August 2006 and formed an island. The crew from a yacht viewed the eruption from a distance of two miles. They reported the island was one mile in diameter with four peaks and a central crater which emitted steam and occasional ash eruptions. Photographs show steam and phreatic eruptions. Observers at a nearby island resort on 9th-11th August reported continuous thunder rumbling to the south and a huge plume of smoke and cloud rising up into the sky.
