Simbo Volcano, Solomon Islands

At the end of September 2006, residents of Simbo Island felt many earthquakes over multiple days. On 21st September there were 7 earthquakes measured. The earthquakes were thought to be due to heating under the volcano.

Dempo Volcano, Indonesia

Dempo Volcano in Southern Sumatra has been increased to level 2 alert (maximum 4) after an increase in seismic activity. The last eruption was in 1994 when mild explosions occurred at the crater lake.

Mt Etna Volcano (Italy)

Explosive activity resumed at Mt Etna volcano yesterday. Strombolian eruptions were visible at SE crater about every 4-30 minutes, sending ash to height of 100 m. SE crater had been quiet for 6 days.

Fourpeaked Volcano (Alaska)

An overflight has confirmed an eruption of Fourpeaked volcano in Alaska. The unmonitored volcano has been inactive for thousands of years. Twin emissions were observed by residents of Homer last Sunday from an area at Fourpeaked glacier. Small earthquakes were detected in the area on Sunday measuring less than 1.8 magnitude.

Fourpeaked Volcano

Twin plumes were observed rising from Fourpeaked glacier on Sunday 17th September. The area was located between Fourpeaked and Douglas volcanoes. Plumes reached 20,000 ft elevation. Fourpeaked volcano is located in the northeast corner of Katmai National Park. Trace of ashfall was recorded at Nonvianuk Lake outlet (110 km NW of the volcano) and near Homer (about 95 miles NE of the volcano). A cloud of sulphur dioxide was detected by satellite images. A strong sulphur smell was reported from the Stony River Valley, 300 km NW of Fourpeaked volcano. The alert level has been increased to "yellow".

Two ash eruptions occurred today at Talang Volcano in Indonesia. The volcano has been placed on higher alert level since last week. The last eruption of the volcano was in July 2005.

Mt Bromo Volcano (Indonesia)

Mt Bromo volcano in Indonesia has been raised to alert level 3 (maximum 4) after an increase in tremors at the volcano. Mt Bromo is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. The crater is frequently visited by tourists. The last eruption in 2004 resulted in fatalities.

Kilauea Volcano (Hawaii)

Lava continues to flow into the sea at Kilauea volcano in Hawaii. Pu`u `O`o crater feeds a lava flow which splits into two about 1 km south of the crater. The campout lava flow reaches the sea at East Ka`ili`ili. The PKK lava flow reaches the sea at East Lae`apuki.

Volcanoes of Guatemala

Eruptions continue at three volcanoes in Guatemala. Incandescent lava flows are visible at Pacaya volcano, and a crater glow is visible at night. At Fuego volcano lava avalanches descend 300 m towards the south. Rumbling sounds were emitted from the crater. Lava avalanches occurred at Santa Maria volcano from Santiaguito lava dome. Ash emissions reach 1.5 km above the volcano.

New eruptions have begun at Mt etna volcano in Italy. Seismic activity was reported on the evening of 30th August. On the morning of 31st August Strombolian eruptions were observed at SE crater. Regular explosions occurred every 5-10 seconds.

Heard Island Volcano (Australia)

Eruptions continue at Heard Island volcano in Australian territory. Hotspots were obsrved at the volcano throughout August. The volcano resumed activity in May 2006 after being quiet for two years. Big Ben is the active volcanic cone on Heard Island.
