Chaitén Volcano, Chile - John Seach

Eruptive activity continues at Chaiten volcano in Chile. Over the past week there has been a decrease in earthquake number and magnitude, with 17 earthquakes recorded per day. Ash emissions rise 1.5 km above the summit. A lava dome continues to grow in the summit crater, which may collapse generating ash and block flows in the adjacent valleys. Dome growth is mostly in the western side of the caldera. Adjacent valleys contain ash deposits which may mobilise in heavy rains, causing lahars. Chaiten volcano remains on alert level RED.

Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii - John Seach

A collapse occurred at the summit vent in Kilauea volcano, Hawaii on 30th June. The collapse occurred at 1:38 PM (Hawaiian Standard Time) Tuesday afternoon, and blocked the summit vent. The event produced a brown plume, booming noises, and ground shaking which was felt at Hawaii Volcano observatory and Jaggar Museum. Between 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM, a section of the floor of Halemaumau Crater collapsed, widening the west rim of the summit vent. By nightfall, the evening glow from Halemaumau vent disappeared. Recently the night glow has attracted crowds of tourists at Jaggar Museum which overlooks Halemaumau crater.

Chaitén Volcano, Chile - John Seach

Between 27th May and 2nd June there was steady growth in the lava dome at Chaiten volcano in Chile. Block and ash flow continued inside the crater, and was sometimes visible from Chaiten town. The eruption of Chaiten volcano remained unchanged, with a column of gas and ash rising up to 1.5 km above the dome complex. The persistence of block and ash flow indicates that dome growth continues, especially toward the western caldera, which is almost completely filled with viscous lava. There is a continued danger of dome collapse and pyroclastic flows which may affect adjacent valleys. Seismic activity remains high. Chaiten volcano remains on alert level RED.

Llaima Volcano, Chile - John Seach

Since 28th May there have been weak explosions at Llaima volcano in Chile. The main crater remains obstructed, and there is an opening of a fissure on the eastern flank of the volcano. Activity remains variable at Llaima volcano with the possibility of ash emissions, lava flows, and pyroclastic flows. The volcano remains at alert level YELLOW.

Karangetang Volcano, Indonesia - John Seach

An eruption occurred at Karangetang volcano, Indonesia on 31st May. Hundreds of people have been evacuated from near the volcano, due to fears of pyroclastic flows. The volcano is located at the northern end of Siau island, north of Sulawesi.

Harrat Lunayyir volcano, Saudi Arabia - John Seach

A series of earthquakes occurred near Harrat Lunayyir volcano in north east Saudi Arabia on Tuesday 19th May 2009. The largest earthquake measured magnitude 5.7. The earthquakes produced cracks in the ground. A total of 2,289 people, including 326 families, were evacuated from a 20 km radius around the volcano, 240 km north of Madinah. Evacuees were housed in Yanbu. The evacuations took place as 30 earthquakes were recorded between 3 and 5.4 on the Richter scale. Local authorities have announced the closure of schools for two weeks starting Saturday in Umlaj.

Chaitén Volcano, Chile - John Seach

Dome growth continues in the summit crater at Chaiten volcano, Chile. The surface morphology of the dome is complex and uneven. The central pinnacle of the dome has broken into three main blocks. The tallest spine is 100 m high. Continuing rapid growth of the dome creates a collapse risk with the subsequent hazard of block and ash flow down the Chaiten River valley. Seismic activity remains high at the volcano. Chaiten volcano remains on the highest alert level - RED.
