A new gas vent has opened in Halema`uma`u crater at the summit of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii. This is the first summit activity in 25 years at the volcano. The vent shows an orange glow at night, and has doubled the already high sulphur dioxide emissions at the summit. Along the east rift zone, lava has reached the sea at two locations - Waikupanaha, and a location 400 m east.
