A great earthquake hit east of the Kurile Islands, Russia on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at 2:23 PM local time. A 10-centimetre wave was reported at Nemuro, on Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido. Active volcanoes within 200 km of the epicentre on Simushir Island include, Milne, Goriaschaia Sopka, Zavaritzki, Prevo Peak, Urataman, and Ketoi volcano on Ketoi Island. Earthquakes of this magnitude can sometimes disrupt volcanoes, leading to eruptions.
