Santa Ana Volcano (Ilamatepec) El Salvador

Ilamatepec volcano has shown increased levels of activity since 27 August 2005. Hundreds of small earthquakes have been registered daily, and there is an increase in water temperature at the volcanic lake. The increased activity indicates magma is close to the surface. The Territorial Studies Service (SNET) of the Ministry of the Environment has declared a yellow alert for the volcano. The Salvadorean government has announced that it will begin carrying out evacuation simulations for the population living near the volcano in anticipation of an eruption. According to the National Emergency Operation Centre (COEN), several shelters have been opened in the area to attend to families that may need to be evacuated. The volcano is not currently erupting.
