A major earthquake (Magnitude 7.3) hit Papua New Guinea on Friday, 9th September at 5:26 PM (local time). The earthquake hit 140 km ESE of Rabaul volcano. Earthquakes of this magnitude are capable of disrupting the magmatic systems of volcanoes. There is a possibility of local tsunamis within 100 km of the earthquke epicenter, but none have been reported.
