More than 11 acres of land collapsed into the ocean at Kilauea volcano in Hawaii on 26-27 August. The collapse of East Lae`apuki lava delta was predicted for a few weeks, as cracks had appeared in the lava bench. Boulders up to 1 m in diameter were thrown onto the shore during the collapse. The bench collapse was 460 m long (parallel to shore) by 150 m wide (perpendicular to shore). Since August 27, lava has filled about 1.7 ha (4.25 acres) of the collapse area. Several streams of lava are pouring into the water off the East Lae`apuki delta.
