The Bicol region of the Philippines close to Mayon volcano has been spared the most damaging effects of Typhoon Mitag. The typhoon changed course yesterday morning, and veered NW towards Aurora and Quezon provinces. About midday Saturday, 96,000 evacuees from coastal villages and flood-prone areas in Albay province were given permission to return to their homes. Residents surrounding Mayon volcano have been spared the effects of lahars and mudflows.
