The epicentre was located 195 km South of Ambon, in the Banda Sea. No tsunami was reported. The earthquake was felt in Darwin, Australia. Earthquakes of this magnitude sometimes disrupt volcanoes within a 500 km radius. Active volcanoes in the area are Gunung Api, Banda Api, Teon, and Wurlali.
