The crater lake at White Island Volcano is close to overflow. The lake started to form in the crater in August 2003, and now is only 3.3 m from overflow level. The lake is being held in place by a barrier of soft material, which has decreased in diameter from 22m last November to 15m. The lake level is expected to rise with continued rainfall during winter. The lake has covered previously active vents, so future eruptions may occur underwater. This indicates a change in the hazard at the volcano. White Island volcano is currently not erupting, and remains at level 1 alert.
